Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, crawl, understand and index your website. On a small business site the checklist is shorter than on a large ecommerce store, but the basics still decide whether your service pages can rank at all.

Work through the sections below in order. The earlier items can stop a page from appearing in search entirely, so they come first.

1. Indexing

2. Crawling

3. Site structure

Search engines and visitors understand a site better when it follows a clear hierarchy. A simple structure for a service business looks like this: homepage, then service pages, then supporting pages such as locations, case studies and articles, all linked together.

4. Duplicate and thin content

5. Speed and mobile

6. Structured data

Structured data (schema markup) describes your content in a format search engines can read. For a service business, the most useful types are usually Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. Test your markup with Google’s Rich Results Test.

7. Security and trust

How often should you run a technical SEO checklist?

Run a full check at least once or twice a year, and always after a redesign, migration, theme change or major plugin update. Check Search Console every month for new indexing or crawling errors.

Technical SEO checklist FAQs

What is the difference between technical SEO and on-page SEO?

This technical SEO checklist covers the seven checks that matter most for a small business website. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl and index your site. On-page SEO improves the content and structure of individual pages so they match what people search for.

Can I do technical SEO myself on WordPress?

Many basics, such as sitemaps, indexing settings, image compression and removing unused plugins, can be handled by a site owner. Complex issues like redirects, canonical problems or slow servers may need a specialist.

How do I know if my pages are indexed?

Use the Pages report in Google Search Console or the URL Inspection tool for a specific page. Searching site:yourdomain.com in Google gives a rough indication but is not exact.
