AI search tools tend to mention businesses they can clearly identify, understand and trust from information available online. You cannot control what an AI tool says, but you can make your business easier to recognise and describe accurately by keeping your information consistent, publishing clear content and earning genuine mentions and reviews.
This is often called GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization. It builds on the same foundations as SEO, with extra attention on clarity, consistency and entity information.
Tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews draw on a mix of their training data and, in many cases, live web results. When someone asks “who is a good dentist for families in Melbourne?”, the tool looks for sources that clearly connect a business to that service and place, and that appear credible.
No one outside these companies knows exactly how each system chooses sources, and the systems change often. That is why the most reliable approach is to strengthen the signals that help any system understand your business.
AI tools often summarise content that answers a question directly. Write pages and articles that answer the questions your customers ask, with a clear answer at the start of each section. Answer Engine Optimization explains this structure in more detail.
General content is easy to replace. Specific, experience-based content is harder to ignore: real process explanations, honest trade-offs, clear pricing approaches and case studies with real details. If you publish a case study, only include results you can stand behind.
Genuine reviews, directory listings, industry associations, guest articles and local media mentions all help show that other sources recognise your business. Focus on quality and relevance rather than volume.
If a crawler cannot load or read your pages, it cannot use them. Make sure important pages are indexable, load quickly and are not hidden behind scripts or logins. Check that your robots.txt does not block crawlers you want to allow.
Ask several AI tools the questions your customers would ask, such as “best local SEO consultant for accountants” or “emergency plumber in Brisbane”, and note whether your business appears and how it is described. Repeat this every month or two. Results vary between tools and over time, so look for trends rather than single answers.

No. Standard answers in tools like ChatGPT are not a paid placement. Visibility comes from clear, trustworthy information about your business across the web.
Schema markup helps search engines understand facts about your business, such as your name, services and location. It is one useful signal, not a guarantee of being mentioned.
There is no fixed timeline. Tools that use live web results can pick up new information quickly, while others update less often. Consistent work over several months gives the best chance.
I help service businesses in Australia, the UK and the USA with local SEO, Google Maps visibility and AI search optimization.
