Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist for Accountants, Dentists and Trades

A step-by-step Google Business Profile checklist covering categories, services, photos, reviews, posts and tracking, written for local service businesses.

Google Business Profile optimization means completing and maintaining your free Google listing so it matches what customers search for and gives them reasons to call you. For most local service businesses it is the single biggest source of calls from Google, which is why it deserves a regular routine rather than a one-off setup.

Use this checklist to review your profile section by section. It works for accountants, dental practices, plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians and most other service businesses.

1. Verification and ownership

2. Core business information

3. Services and description

List each service separately with a short, plain description. Use the words customers actually type, for example “BAS preparation” or “blocked drain repair”, instead of internal jargon. Your business description should explain what you do, who you help and where, in a few clear sentences.

4. Photos

Real photos help customers trust you. Avoid stock images, which add little value and can look generic next to competitors with genuine pictures.

5. Reviews

When replying to a negative review, stay calm, acknowledge the issue, and move the detailed conversation offline. Future customers read replies as closely as the reviews themselves.

6. Posts and questions

Google Business Profile posts let you share updates, offers and news. They keep the profile active and give customers more information. Also check the questions section and answer common questions clearly, since the answers can influence whether someone calls.

7. Tracking

What to trackWhy it matters
Calls from the profileThe clearest sign the profile brings leads
Website clicksShows how many people want more information
Direction requestsUseful for businesses customers visit
Searches that found youShows which terms your profile matches

Review these numbers monthly. If calls fall while views stay steady, look at your reviews, photos and competitors’ profiles for the reason.

How often should you update your profile?

Check core details whenever something changes, add photos and posts at least monthly, and respond to reviews within a few days. A short monthly routine is usually enough to keep the profile accurate and active.
